The medical establishment grows every day with not only doctors and nurses, but the front lines of the pharmacy techs. These days pharmacy tech training is a much needed skill in the work force. You can take pharmacy tech training courses all over the United States and Canada.

You do not even need to go to a high priced university to get the training, most technical schools offer some form of training to get yourself certified.

Students who participate in pharmacy tech training gain valuable education and skills in the pharmaceutical field. Heavy discussion is given to terminology, calculations and record keeping. Additionally, those participating in training will learn about the laws and ethics of pharmacy procedures.

A pharmacy tech training program usually requires the minimum of an associate’s degree in a medical field of study. This field of study should be in relation to the duties of a pharmacy tech. The student should also consider courses associated with health sciences, biology, physical and natural sciences.

These courses will give the student a better grasp of the pharmacy tech training courses. Pharmacy tech training is similar to any other lower level training. Associate’s degrees can be achieved in two years or less and at minimal cost if taken at a technical college.

Until very recently, there was no traditional pharmacy tech training available. The traditional training method for pharmacy techs was on the job training which in some ways is better, but in other ways would be more dangerous for someone who has no medical knowledge whatsoever.

With a fierce job market and expenses associated with on the job training, certified pharmacy techs are more desirable in the work place compared to one who has not been properly trained. Military medical personnel were the first to offer formal pharmacy tech training.

Pharmacy tech programs instruct their students in many areas of pharmacy: the methods of assisting pharmacists in labeling and filling prescriptions; assisting patient drop off and pick up of prescriptions; database entry of prescription information as well as other accounting duties;

customer verification for accurate prescriptions; screening pharmacy calls; insurance company rapport to obtain payment and refill authorizations; compounding oral solutions, ointments and creams; scheduling and maintaining job functions;

packaging bulk medications; ordering medications; preparing medication inventories; preparing chemotherapy medications; putting together nutrition solutions and intravenous mixtures; and out-patient and in-patient dispensing.

The National Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is a strictly voluntary examination.

However, as previously mentioned, employers are more likely to hire a pharmacy tech who has had formal training and passed this certification. Major drug chains have taken the initiative in the boom of pharmacy tech training as they recognize the pharmacy technician certification.

Pharmacy tech training has grown in popularity and previously employed workers are offered training programs by their work place to get the proper certification. Those who attend pharmacy tech training will learn skills necessary to become a proper assistant to a licensed pharmacist.
