Pharmacy Tech Classes

Pharmacy tech classes

In this section I will expand on pharmacy tech classes. As mentioned earlier on the home page, there are 2 common types of pharmacy tech classes.

I. Classes that prepare you for the board exam. Click to see example

II.Classes that you can take at a community or technical college.

The differences between these training programs are vast and briefly discussed on the home page.
Pharmacy tech classes that you take by attending board exam preparation courses have the advantage of being short in length, low in cost and some also offer additional learning tools besides the course curriculum. There are mainly two ways to attend classes in this setting;

I. Traditional classroom setting
II.Distance learning

Pharmacy tech classes in a traditional classroom setting for a board exam course would be the same as what a community or technical college may offer, i.e. a classroom and an instructor.
Most pharmacy tech classes for board exam courses are from 8 -12 weeks in length and classes may be 1 day per week for a few hours. Also, some classes may be entirely online and self paced and therefore offered at a lower price and in my opinion present the best value. BUT, you need to shop around and see who offers the BEST value.

Classes may also be taken via distance learning from your home computer. In this environment you have more flexibility and coursework may be scheduled around your timings not to mention the convenience it offers.

Some programs may give you the flexibility to finish the course at your own pace others may not. On the other hand there are online courses that are similar to a classroom setting and which have deadlines. These courses have deadlines that you have to meet and complete the coursework in the designated time period.

***** Sidebar: *****
I have instituted an online learning environment that is "SELF PACED" and similar to a classroom environment and have had great success with it. The reason for this is because the course exceeds the minimum requirements of the guidelines found below and the students feel that the online environment is very user friendly, flexible and convenient.

Moving on...

A lot of courses nowadays say they’re distance learning courses whether from a community or technical college or exam preparation course but in reality most of them aren't true distance learning courses in my opinion because they don’t provide you with the fundamentals. That is, start with the basics and progress in a step by step fashion.

A true distance learning course in my opinion should offer additional learning tools besides the manuals or books they provide.

I have created a list below that reviews the main points to look for in a distance learning course.

• Self paced program offer with optional instructor support.
• Additional learning tools besides the manual and book they provide.
• Comprehensive training that includes major aspects of pharmacy.
• Program composed by pharmacy professionals .
• Reasonably short course duration.
• High pass rate for students that have taken the course and passed the exam.
• Are there student testimonials?

From the research I've done I've discovered that pharmacy tech classes taken at a community or technical college are very different from board exam courses because...

• Costs run into the thousands.
• Course duration may exceed 9 months to 1 year.
• Do not specialize in providing pharmacy specific knowledge, there may be a bunch of other courses to take that may not be necessary for what you want to do which is take pharmacy tech classes so you can take the exam and become a certified pharmacy technician.
• Distance learning classes with a community or technical college may not have the above features from the list.
• Instructors may not be experienced pharmacy techs or pharmacists.
• Course work may not be recognized by the PTCB.
• Training may not be comprehensive or effective and may be diluted since you’d have to take other courses as well.

As you can see, board exam courses are better, faster and won’t cost you an arm and a leg to attend.
